Lifelong Learning for Stewards
Training can help stewards understand their jobs better, which makes them easier to do. Training helps you understand your role and responsibilities, your relationship to the hierarchy of the union and to your fellow members. Training can also help you acquire new skills or fortify old ones in areas such as communications, listening, understanding the contract and mobilization. In-person workshops and online training are available from PEF. Advanced steward training in specialized areas will take the steward beyond the basics.
A lot of effective training takes place informally, too. On-the-job experience alone will help you find your way, and your field representative is always available to help you. You’ll always learn something by attending the convention, participating in labor-management meetings, or attending union actions. Meetings can give stewards a chance to discuss problems with other union leaders.
